Whether you’re just starting out or you’re already an advanced student, this guide will provide helpful vocabulary on colors in Russian! We’ll first start with the basic colors you should know, and then we’ll get more specific by describing and modifying the colors themselves, and going over more descriptive color words.
Learning colors in a foreign language helps you better describe people, places, and things, which is a critical skill – especially if you don’t know some translation and you need to describe it for your speaking partner! So if you need to describe the clothes someone is wearing or what a certain animal looks like, the color vocabulary in Russian below can help boost your conversation skills and general vocabulary.

Let’s get started!
There are two ways to indicate the color of something in Russian:
Red – Кра́сный
Orange – Ора́нжевый
Yellow – Жёлтый
Green – Зелёный
Blue (dark) – Си́ний
Blue (light) – Голубо́й
Purple(Violet) – Фиоле́товый
Pink – Ро́зовый
Brown – Кори́чневый
Grey – Се́рый
White ⬜ – Бе́лый
Black – Чёрный
Light-[color] – Све́тло-[color]
Dark-[color] – Тёмно-[color]
Ex. Light blue – Све́тло-си́ний
Ex. Dark green – Тёмно-зелёный
Bright-[color] – Я́рко-[color]
Off-[color] – Се́ро-[color]
Ex. Bright red – Я́рко-кра́сный
Ex. Off yellow – Се́ро-жёлтый
If a color you’re trying to describe doesn’t perfectly fit into one color category, Russian has an ending you can use (“-ова́тый”) -that gives it the same meaning as adding the suffix “-ish” does in English! See below for examples.
ex. Greenish – Зеленова́тый
ex. Yellowish – Желтова́тый
ex. Pinkish – Розова́тый
*Note: When adding the suffix “-ова́тый,” take note of how the ударение shifts and affects the word’s pronunciation! In the examples of greenish and yellowish (Зеленова́тый and Желтова́тый) above, both of the original color words (Зелёный and Жёлтый) lose their “ё” vowel (which is normally stressed) when adding the “–ова́тый” suffix. Additionally, be sure to reduce non-stressed vowel sounds for more native-like pronunciation! For example, in the word pinkish (Розова́тый), the non-stressed “о” sounds like “а” – /ruh-za-VA-tiy/.
